Your First Tanzania Safari, Planned Properly

A first safari raises a lot of questions: which parks, how many days, what season, lodge or tented camp, private or shared. Most first-time visitors to Tanzania start in Arusha and follow the northern circuit: Tarangire for elephants, Ngorongoro Crater for an extraordinary concentration of wildlife in one place, and the Serengeti for its scale.

We usually suggest at least five or six days on safari for a first trip so that you are not spending most of your time in the vehicle between parks. From there, you can add Zanzibar for a few beach days or keep the whole trip on the mainland.

Who It Suits

  • Travelers visiting Africa for the first time
  • Couples and families who want a classic Big Five itinerary
  • Anyone who wants guidance before choosing a package

How many days do you need?

Three or four days covers Tarangire and Ngorongoro, but the Serengeti is far enough away that it is better with at least two nights. Six to eight days lets you see the main northern parks without rushing.

Where do you fly into?

For the northern circuit, fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), between Arusha and Moshi. If you are adding the beach, many travelers fly home from Zanzibar (ZNZ).

Questions We Are Often Asked

Is a first safari better private or shared?

A private safari lets you set the pace, stop as long as you like at sightings and adjust the day. Shared safaris can lower the cost. Tell us your budget and we will explain the options for your dates.

What is the best month for a first safari?

The long dry season, roughly late June to October, is the easiest time for game viewing. January to March is also excellent in the southern Serengeti during the calving season.
